Summer flower care tips

The summer months can take their toll on everyone. The heat often leaves us sluggish and tired during the day. Imagine how your freshly cut flowers must feel. Removed from their natural environment where they once thrived, and now placed in a container of water. Unsurprisingly, they tend to die too quickly. However, this is also largely due to the fact that many people do not follow the correct care instructions for cut flowers. We also don’t intend to include those instructions every time we send flowers. It’s natural to hear all the so-called “tricks” when they really don’t work. Here are some real steps you can take to help your summer flower bouquet last longer, and if you’re sending someone a flower delivery during the summer, do them a favour and include these notes along with it.

What you need:

– A bucket of fresh water

– Floral preserve

– Spray bottle with fresh, clean water

– A sharp pair of scissors

Directions:

– When you receive your delivery of fresh flowers, the first thing to do is place them in a

bucket of water. Even if they come with a vase, remove them from the vase and place them inside a bucket. Depending on the type of flowers in the bouquet, you should use warm

or cold water. Flowers grown from bulbs prefer cool water, while others do best in warm water.

or water at room temperature.

– Once you’ve placed your summer flower bouquet in fresh water, you can take your time and clean the vase.

– Add some water (just a couple of centimetres) to the vase and dissolve the flower food in it.

– One by one you cut each of the stems of your flowers. Do this under water if possible so no air gets in. You should also cut them at an angle. This creates a larger surface area for absorption and ensures that the stems do not rest on the bottom of the vase.

– While cutting the bases, make sure you cut the lowest leaves on the stems. You don’t want any of these leaves in the flower water, as it will encourage the growth of bacterial growth.

– As you cut each stem, you can put that flower into the vase.

– When all your flowers are in the vase and you’re ready to display your bouquet, you have to think very carefully where to place them. Don’t place flowers near a window hitting the sun directly. The sunlight will heat the water even more and stimulate the growth of bacteria in water.

– Flowers need some airflow, but not too much, so make sure they are not placed in a draughty place or near air conditioners or fans.

– Change the water regularly. In summer, water will evaporate much faster and the the flowers will also absorb a lot. Make sure your vase never dries out and that water is always clean and fresh. Every time you change the water, add a little flower food.

– You can also keep a spray bottle of cool water nearby so that you can occasionally give the flowers a little spray. This is especially good for more exotic flowers, as it creates some added moisture to their surroundings.

– Bouquets of flowers for special events can be stored in the refrigerator until the last moment. If you are planning your wedding or any other occasion during the summer months, keep your flowers nice and fresh just like they’re arranged in any flower shop.

With these essential care tips, you can be sure that your summer flower arrangement will stay beautiful for that much longer. Not only does this mean that you’ll enjoy them for longer, but you’ll also enjoy better value for money.
