The right water for your flower arrangements

When you receive a fresh flower delivery and you want to make your flowers last as long as possible, you will need to take a few steps. These steps include trimming the stems, removing extra leaves, and adding flower preserve to the water. Regarding the water, many agree that it’s also important to choose the right type of water to help your flowers last that much longer.

It’s important to understand how different types of water will affect your flowers before making any choices. In most cases, fresh cut flowers prefer room temperature water. The only exception to this rule are flowers that are grown from bulbs. Flowers like tulips prefer crisp cool water as opposed to the usual warm water. Remember, warm or room temperature is ideal for most flowers but you should never use hot water.

When you drink something cold, how much can you really guzzle before getting a brain freeze? The same goes for cut flowers. They also struggle to absorb enough water and nutrients if the water is too cold. Hot water has the same effect. We usually sip on our hot coffee or tea but, if the drink is room temperature, we can consume an entire glass in minutes or even seconds. Allowing for speedy water absorption ensures that your flowers will last as long as possible.

Air is another point to consider. If air gets into the flower stems, it can have a similar effect as when we swallow air while drinking. Air bubbles in the stems can slow down the absorption process and this can affect the lifespan of your flowers. To prevent air from entering the stems, it’s a good idea to trim them under water.

It’s important to place your fresh flowers in fresh water. It’s also important to make sure that the vase water provides both hydration and nutrition. The best way of doing this is by adding flower food to the water. You can buy packages or you can make your own. There are a number of recipes out there and you can try a few of them before settling on your favourite. If you use the packages, make sure that you follow the instructions to the letter for best results.
