Red roses and why they are romantic

When you look around for romantic flowers for your loved one, you will most certainly come across at least one bouquet of red roses. These blooms have long been associated with romance and passion. But, have you ever wondered why? Here are some interesting facts about the history of these blooms and why they are so romantic.

Greek mythology

In Greek mythology, the goddess of flowers, Chloris, created the rose. She found the body of a nymph in the forest and she took it to the goddess of love, Aphrodite. She asked Aphrodite to give the flower beauty. She then asked the god of wine, Dionysus, to give the flower a sweet smell. The flower was given three graces: joy, charm and brightness. Zephyr, the god of the west wind, blew away the clouds and allowed Apollo, the sun god, to shine down and make this stunning flower bloom. This is why the Greeks referred to red roses as the Queen of flowers.

Recent history

In more recent history, the colour red was used in the language of flowers to express affection and love. During the Victorian Era, it was not possible to directly express your affections. For this reason, men would send women flowers with various meanings as a way of sending a message. Red roses were associated with a deep and passionate love which is why we still use them in romantic displays today.

Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is one of the most romantic days of the year. Red roses are the number one choice for this occasion and florists around the world have countless orders to fulfill. Of course, they are not only for this one day. You can send a red rose bouquet for your anniversary, other romantic milestones and even just because!

Number of stems

Apart from being associated with passion and love, red roses can also send a slightly varied message depending on the number of stems that you choose. In addition, if you combine red and white roses, you will send a message of unity. Red and yellow roses symbolise happiness and joy. If you are ever in doubt, remember that a mixed rose bouquet will make any lucky recipient smile.

The next time you want to send the most romantic bouquet you can find, ask your florist about their selection of red roses. These floral displays can be arranged in so many different ways from vases to hat boxes and everything in between. You can even add something extra to your order such as luxury chocolates, a bottle of bubbly or a bright balloon.
