Paper poinsettia design

When it comes to sending flowers for Christmas, poinsettias are one of the most popular options. If you’re the type of person who loves arts and crafts and wants to get creative during the holidays, these paper poinsettias are perfect for you! Being made of paper, they will obviously last longer than new ones and you can use them in many ways to brighten up your home during the holidays. A paper poinsettia or a few can be added to your Christmas wreath, your Christmas tree and elsewhere in your home. You can also make them in various sizes depending on where you plan to use them.

You will need:

  • Red and yellow paper

  • Green paper (optional)

  • Scissors

  • Paper glue

Directions:

  • When you begin making your first paper poinsettia, take your time to ensure that you have all of your materials prepared. Search for these plants online to get an idea of their appearance.

  • Trace the outline of the petal on the red pieces of paper. You will need five of these. Once you are done, you can cut them out.

  • You can fold the petals along the centre to give them some shape.

  • Glue your flower petals together so that each petal overlaps the next.

  • Make sure there is no gap in the centre of your design.

  • Cut a small circle out of the yellow paper and place it in the centre of the flower.

  • Next, if you like, you can add some green leaves to the back of the flower. They should be larger than the flower petals and spaced apart rather than overlapping one another like the flower petals.

Display in a vase

Once your paper poinsettia designs are ready, you can cut the stems and place them in a pot or pot (like a fresh potted poinsettia plant). If you choose to place them in a clear vase, you can use vase fillers, such as coloured stones, to secure the stems in place and give your arrangement that special finishing touch.

Hanging designs

Alternatively, you can string some type of clear twine or use wire stems to secure the poinsettias to the Christmas tree or use them to add a little more colour to an ornament, wreath or garland.

Alternative colours

What you may not know is that poinsettias come in various colours, so you can make them in different colours too. You may not like the idea of using yellow paper for the petals because it doesn’t look as festive. But what about gold? You can also add small details like glitter or small gems. This will really make your paper poinsettia shine!

If you wish, you can replace the paper with your favourite fabric. Velvet style fabrics look luxurious and also have some of the most amazing colours. The key when it comes to using fabric is to make the petals double-sided (both sides covered with fabric) and insert a sturdy, stiff piece of cardboard in the centre. The cardboard should be cut into the same shape as the petals of each petal to ensure it holds its shape. You can also use something a little more interesting as the centre for these flowers and instead of yellow paper you can add a sparkly gem or a fancy looking button. This will take more time and effort than your regular paper poinsettia but it will be worth it in the end.
