Make potpourri yourself

Potpourri is not only wonderful for giving a room that fresh scent, but it can also be a lovely decorative addition to your home. The best part of all is that you don’t have to buy potpourri when you can make it yourself.

The first step you will need to take is to prepare your plant materials. Potpourri is made from dried plant material. So, this means that you need to select the perfect plant matter and make sure that it’s completely dry before you use it. Flower petals make the best potpourri. Rose petals work particularly well. If you want to dry out the flowers faster, you will need to remove the petals and spread them out on a flat surface. They should be placed in a warm, dry place to help speed up the drying process. You may need to toss the petals around every couple of days before they are completely dried out.

When selecting the flowers for your potpourri, it’s important to inspect the flowers for any significant damage. If the flowers have started to decay, they will not be suitable. Broken or bruised petals should be just fine. It’s really only rot and mould that you need to worry about.

Now that all your plant material is ready, it’s time to choose the perfect scent. This often depends on the season and your personal preferences. There are plenty of essential oils available today and you can even create your own blends. Some examples include vanilla, clove, cinnamon, and mint.

While some might say that you should add a few drops to your potpourri but this can be tricky. You could end up adding too much or you could end up with a few highly concentrated petals and others that don’t have any scent at all. Instead, you should add some oil to a spray bottle with water and gently spray your petals. Toss them around a little to mix them up. Let them stand and check the strength. If you want a stronger scent, you can spray them again. You should always only spray lightly. When you notice the scent becoming weaker after several days, you can spray again to freshen them up.
