Giving your home that Christmas smell

Studies have shown that our most powerful sense is our sense of smell. Which is why so many people associate specific smells with certain occasions – including Christmas. If you want to truly embrace the holiday spirit this year, here are some ways to make your home smell like Christmas.

Real greenery

Real Christmas foliage is one of the best ways to give your home the scent of Christmas. If possible, use a fresh Christmas tree or at leas a fresh wreath and centrepieces for your tables. Wreaths that are made from real pine and fir will give your home that beautiful fresh forest smell that we have grown to love. It’s also a good idea to make sure that you add some sort of fresh foliage to as many rooms as possible so that the scent spreads throughout your home.

Scented candles

Pine and fir are not the only scents associated with Christmas and there are a number of other scents that you can welcome into your home during this time of year. One of the most popular of which being cinnamon. There is something about cinnamon at this time of year that really warms the home and will make your guests feel even more welcome.

Get cooking

There is nothing quite like the smell of biscuits baking in the oven or other baked goods for that matter. The sweet scent of baked goods is a lovely way to embrace the holiday spirit and these comfort foods are delicious during the colder months too.

Make potpourri

Just as there are different candle scents that suit this time of year, so too are there different essential oils that you can use. Whether you have a bowl of potpourri or a selection of dried petals, you can add your favourite oils to give your home a lovely fragrance. Apart from your petals, you can also add dried citrus fruit peels and cinnamon sticks. When you feel like the fragrance is not as strong as you would like, freshen things up with a few more drops of oil.
