Fresh flower transport tips for winter

When purchasing a fresh flower arrangement it is important to remember some essential guidelines regarding their correct transportation. While cut flowers can be quite sturdy, they need some care to ensure they don’t get damaged while you’re on your way to surprising someone special. Below are some important transportation tips to keep your flowers safe during the winter.

Adequate support

The first thing to do when placing your fresh flower bouquet in your vehicle is to provide it with proper support. If you are lucky enough to have a helper accompanying you, he or she may ask you to hold the bouquet for the entire journey. If no one is traveling with you or if the trip is particularly long, you should place your bouquet in a box or drawer, wrapping it with packing material to ensure it doesn’t fall.

Be careful with water

When transporting a fresh flower arrangement, you will need to soak them in a little water, but that doesn’t mean you have to fill the vase to the brim. You should add enough water to cover the bottom of the stems. The recipient can always add more water as soon as the bouquet is delivered.

Temperature control

While you may be tempted to turn up the heat in your car, you shouldn’t let it get too hot. Excessive heat can cause flowers to wilt. Likewise, you shouldn’t place fresh flowers near your vehicle’s vents, as this will push hot air directly onto the flowers, causing the same effect as excessive heat.

Sunlight exposure

Even though the sun isn’t as strong in the winter months, it can still cause a lot of damage to a fresh flower arrangement. Make sure you place the flowers in the perfect spot to keep them out of the sun.

Avoid windows

Keep the fresh flower bouquet far enough away from car windows. Cold air from outside can make windows very cold. If your flowers come into contact with the frozen window, they may suffer a shock that can cause them to die prematurely.

With all these handy tips for transporting fresh flower arrangements, you’ll ensure that your beautiful bouquet arrives as it should, no matter the distance it has to travel. Of course, if you have a loved one who lives far away, you can always ask your florist to deliver on your behalf.
