Caring for Mother’s Day flowers

Receiving a fresh flower arrangement for Mother’s Day brings any lucky woman plenty of joy. If you want to get as much out of your flowers as possible, you need to take proper care of your blooms. It’s good to remember that there are two different types of flower care. The first being general care tips and the second includes tips for different types of blooms.

Caring for tulips

Cut tulips are very popular flowers for Mother’s Day. They are available in various wonderful colours and they make an amazing impression. Sometimes, when your tulip flower delivery arrives, these blooms might appear to be a bit droopy. This is most likely because they are in desperate need of some water. If this is the case, you can keep the wrapper on for the first day while your flowers rehydrate. Tulips are known to naturally bend towards the light. Make sure that you position your vase in order to prevent the arrangement from becoming lopsided. Their average lifespan is 5 days but they can sometimes last longer.

Caring for alstroemeria

These flowers are also known as Peruvian lilies and they are available in several tropical colours. These blooms are long-lasting and they usually stay beautiful for 7 to 8 days. If they arrive with slightly wilted petals, you can easily revive them by placing them in a vase of fresh water and flower food. Within 12 hours you will notice that they perk right up. If they arrive in bud form, they usually bloom within three days provided they are properly cared for.

Caring for lilies

Lilies are another favourite for Mother’s Day. There are three main types: Asiatic, Oriental, and LA hybrid. Some of the most popular oriental lilies include casablanca and stargazer lilies. Asiatic lilies are smaller but available in more colours. The hybrids have a medium-sized bloom and they last wonderfully long. On average, lilies tend to last for 5 to 7 days. Pollen is the main concern when it comes to lilies. They can stain your linens and clothing. You can remove the anthers to prevent all that mess or you can clean up fallen pollen with a cotton bud.

General flower care

It should go without saying that all flowers require similar care no matter what. They will all need to have their stems trimmed. Trimming should be done at an angle to allow for improved water absorption. It’s also a good idea add flower food to your vase water. Replacing cloudy vase water will help keep your flowers fresher for longer.
