Why cacti make an excellent gift
When sending a plant to a loved one or friend, it’s important to consider their preferences as well as their lifestyle. Different kinds of plants require different levels of care and maintenance. Somebody who leads a very busy lifestyle with plenty of work and family commitments, might not necessarily have the time to tend to plants that require daily attention.
This is where cacti and succulents come in. These plants are known for their ability to thrive in the harshest of conditions – the desert. With minimal water and extreme temperatures, these plants not only grow but many of them even produce flowers and fruit! When you send a cactus, you can be sure that the recipient will have absolutely no trouble taking care of it! The only real “risk” to the plant is excessive water. For this reason, these plants should rather be kept indoors or an undercover area. This way, if a thunderstorm does develop or if it rains for several days, you don’t have to worry about your cactus receiving too much water.
Cacti are also known to grow at an incredibly slow rate. This means that a small cactus won’t outgrow its tiny pot for quite some time. Succulents tend to grow somewhat faster than cacti but they are also usually slower growers than many other plants. If you want to transfer your small cactus to a larger pot, you don’t need to go just one or two sizes up. Avoid regular replanting by selecting a pot that will allow for years of growth. Yet another point that makes these plants low maintenance!
Cacti are intriguing in every way. Some have sharp thorns while others look like they are coated with fur. Some are bright green and simply increase in size and sprout smaller branches from the base of the plant. Others produce gorgeous flowers. Cacti flowers are not usually large and since they are proportionate to the size of the plant. What they may lack in size they more than make up for in colour! The flowers that these plants produce are unlike any other and they will certainly brighen any room!
Finally, cacti can be decorated. It might sound a bit cliché to some but cacti are often associated with Mexico even though various species grow around the world. As a result, it’s not uncommon to see small cacti decorated with a miniature sambrero. If you think that this sort of décor will make your friend or loved one smile, then go ahead and decorate the cacti before you send it!
