Autumn arrangements with pumpkins

When it comes to autumn arrangements, pumpkins and gourds are one of the most popular accessories. Not only do they suit the season, but they can really help you create the perfect autumn-themed bouquet. You can even hollow out a pumpkin to use as a vase! If you have never carved pumpkins or used them as vases, here are some essential tips.

Tips for pumpkin carving

Learning the art of pumpkin carving can really help bring your autumn arrangements to life. When creating a vase, you will need to concentrate on hollowing out the pumpkin rather than making holes in the walls. You want it to be able to hold water and prove stable enough to hold your blooms. If you really want to carve a design into the sides of the pumpkin, you will need to insert a transparent holder (jar, glass, etc) inside the pumpkin to hold water. When making a autumn bouquet with a pumpkin vase, remember these tips:

  • Ensure that your pumpkin is larger enough to hold all the flowers.
  • Inspect the pumpkin for soft spots. Make sure it is solid and hard all around.
  • Look for a flat side to ensure that your vase will have a stable base.
  • Wash the exterior of your pumpkin thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth.
  • NEVER scrub your pumpkin because it will remove the outermost layer of the skin.
  • Cut out a circle from the top of the pumpkin.
  • Scrape out the seeds and feel free to set them aside to dry and enjoy as a healthy snack.
  • Use petroleum jelly (Vaseline) to coat all areas where you have cut the pumpkin. This will help preserve the pumpkin and slow down the natural process of decay.
  • Use wax or liquid floor cleaner to shine up the exterior of the pumpkin.
  • Add a jar or glass of water to the inside of the pumpkin if desired and arrange your flowers.
  • Other uses for hollowed out pumpkins include potpourri holders and soup bowls. If you are using them as soup bowls, you should skip the petroleum jelly step.

Painting pumpkins

Another great way of decorating pumpkins for autumn arrangements is by painting them. Here are some pumpkin painting tips:

  • Clean and dry your pumpkin(s) thoroughly.
  • Set up in a well-ventilated room.
  • Cover your work surface to protect it from any overspray or dripping paint.
  • Apply a multi-purpose sealer to the area you wish to paint.
  • Draw patterns on your pumpkin with a marker.
  • Apply paint as desired.
  • Add accessories such as stickers, buttons and so on. Use a glue gun to stick them in place.

These are just a few ideas to help you create autumn arrangements with pumpkins. Remember to keep an eye on the health of your pumpkin vase as well as your fresh flowers. If you notice decay, you can try cutting it out and resealing the freshly cut area with petroleum jelly.
