A Christmas arrangement for your mantel piece

When the festive season approaches, it can be great fun to decorate various areas of your home. One of the most popular rooms to fill with Christmas décor is the living room. If you have a fireplace, you may have a mantle piece that could look a little empty without something festive to brighten it up. Here is a great idea to help you create a Christmas arrangement for this very spot.

You will need:

– Small vase or vases of your choice

– Festive flowers and foliage of your choice

Directions:

  • Depending on the size of your mantle piece, you might like to decorate with one or more bouquets. When choosing the right vase for a Christmas arrangement, you need to take into account the size and width of your mantle piece. You do not want your vase to rest on the edge and risk it falling and breaking.

  • Once you have selected your vase or vases, you need to choose your flowers accordingly. Consider the size and height of the vase since this will determine the number of stems you can insert as well as the best stem length.

  • For a festive theme, you do not necessarily need to use specific flowers but you should stick to a specific colour scheme. Examples include red, white and green or even red and gold or blue, white and silver or perhaps pure white. Consider the décor in the rest of the room and plan according to this.

  • Add water and flower food to your vase but make sure that you do not fill the vase too much. When adding your stems, it will displace the water which will cause the water level to rise.

  • When arranging your bouquet, you should start by adding some foliage and filler flowers around the edge.

  • Once this is done, you can place the focal flowers securely in the middle. The stems from the foliage and filler flowers will help hold them in place.

  • Complete your arrangement by inserting some mass flowers, a few more fillers and some foliage here and there.

  • Take care not to add too many stems. If you have a small vase, you may only need a single focal flower. For larger vases, you can use three or five focal blooms. The key to the perfect focal point is using an uneven number of focal flowers. They do not necessarily need to all be bunched together. You can add some foliage and filler flowers in between.

  • Place your bouquet on the mantle piece and enjoy! If you like, you can add two smaller bouquets, one on each side of the main arrangement. You can also add other Christmas decorations to this space.

  • Just remember, if you plan on lighting a fire, you should remove your fresh flowers from this area since the heat can cause them to wilt.

It is also worth noting that you can create a Christmas arrangement using fresh flowers or, if you prefer, you can opt for silk blooms. If you choose silk flowers, you will not need to worry about the vase water. You can add a vase filler if you like. Of course, just because they aren’t fresh does not mean that they are immune to heat. So, these too should be removed from the mantle piece if you light a fire.
