Heat-loving plants

It’s no secret that different plants have different preferences. This goes for potted plants as well as those in your garden. Some prefer direct sunlight, others thrive in shade. There are plants that prefer cooler weather and then there are those that love the heat. Here are some plants that thrive in the heat.

Mandevilla Plants

This annual vine grows up to 20 feet in height. It has trumpet-shaped flowers in shades of pink, red or white. Many refer to it as a tropical or subtropical plant. While it is an annual plant, it can be overwintered indoors if it is kept in a sunny spot.

Ageratum

This is one of the easiest annuals to grow because it can handle the heat and frost. It is also really resistant to pests which makes it perfect even for a beginner gardener. It’s also interesting to note that this is one of the few plants in the world that produces natural blue flowers.

Persian Shield Plants

This is a leafy plant that can be overwintered indoors. It makes a lovely centrepiece in a planter. Its purple, green and black foliage makes this plant truly unique. If you live in an area frequented by rabbits or deer, you will be happy to know that this plant is resistant to these furry creatures.

SunPatiens

Similar to impatiens, this variety is known for its love of the sun. Make sure that you choose a sunny spot for them. They thrive in container gardens as well as houseplants. Another advantage is that they are not sensitive to the frost which makes them wonderfully hardy.

Licorice Plant

This is a trailing vine that spills over beautifully to complement the rest of the plants in your container garden. This plant has fuzzy leaves that protect it from pests and, in the hotter months, you will certainly get that sweet licorice scent – hence the name.

When planning your garden or even container garden, keep these heat-loving plants in mind. They will keep your garden looking its best even when temperatures rise beyond what some of your other plants may tolerate.
