Tropical flower care advice

When shopping for fresh flowers, you will notice just how many different varieties are available. Some of these blooms are cut from tropical plants and this means that these cut stems will require a certain degree of special care. If you receive a tropical flower arrangement, you should keep the following tips in mind to ensure that it lasts as long as possible.

Specially cultivated

Tropical plants require very specific conditions in order to ensure that they grow and bloom. Dry or cold environments will not benefit these types of plants. Since the plant itself requires special care, it’s easy to understand why a tropical flower arrangement will also require some special attention.

Fresh water

Once your tropical flower bouquet is delivered, the first thing you want to do is unwrap them and place them in some fresh water. You should trim the stems at an angle and, if possible, do so under water. This prevents air bubbles from entering the stem which could cause the blooms to perish prematurely.

Condition the stems

These flowers could also use some conditioning before they are arranged. You should set your tropical flower bouquet room temperature water for best results. However, when it comes to certain blooms like Anthuriums, Oncidium and Dendrobium orchids, prefer cooler water.

Display in a safe spot

After conditioning the stems of each tropical flower in the arrangement, you will need to choose the perfect spot to put this bouquet on display. They should be kept away from sources of heat, wind and air conditioners. You should also avoid placing them in direct sunlight. This will help ensure that they do not start to wilt too quickly.

Misting

Tropical plants thrive in areas with higher levels of humidity. Many tropical flower types will, therefore, enjoy some light misting with fresh water from time to time. You should also make an effort to change the vase water every day or every second day. When you do, inspect the stems to see if they are slimy. If this is the case, trim the bottom parts of the stem to get rid of bacteria that has started to develop on the stem.

When you order a tropical flower arrangement for yourself or somebody special, it is important to make sure that you only buy from a reputable florist. You want to ensure that they offer a satisfaction or freshness guarantee. Should the bouquet arrive in less than perfect condition, you will be able to raise the issue with the florist and they should offer some form of compensation.
