Summer blooms to make the season memorable

Summer is associated with some of the most impressive blooms. Not only do they come in a large selection of colours, but there are also many different types of summer blooms to choose from. However, when the nights start to get a little cooler, many flowering plants stop producing flowers and we are left with only a select few. Fortunately, there are a number of flowers that continue to bloom long after their summer season is over. One of them are zinnias.

Later bloomers

Zinnias are known to bloom much later than other summer blooms. They come in a wide variety of colours which means they look great on their own or you can combine them with other flowers if you like.

Hardy plants

If you grow zinnias in your garden, you’ll be happy to know that they’re wonderfully hardy. They do not require such delicate care when still attached to the plant. However, once you pick them up, you’ll need to be a little more careful not to damage them. When harvesting them from your garden, you should always use a sharp knife or scissors to avoid damaging the stem or plant. The less damage you do, the better for the plant and your cut flowers, as they have hollow stems.

Picking tips

If any of the stems bend when you harvest them or if you notice bent stems on the plant, you can still use these plants. Simply cut the stem above the bend, then select a suitable vase or container to hold the flower. You can cut a few more flowers to add to the smaller arrangement and place them in an area with limited space. Smaller arrangements can add colour without taking up essential space! If the stem is very short, you can add the flower to a band or place each of the short-stemmed zinnias in a shot glass and then place them together on a table in your living room or dining room.

These summer blooms will certainly fill your garden and your home with some rich colour and amazing textural décor. You don’t need a lot of these flowers to make an impressive statement. Just a few perfect stems and you’re all set!
