Make your own silk rose topiary

Topiaries are becoming increasingly popular as home décor as well as decorative items for events like weddings. Rather than using fresh flowers, however, many people are opting for silk flowers instead. Silk flowers last longer and they don’t require water. When using silk flowers, it’s also convenient since you can make these displays ahead of time. You won’t need to worry about the flowers wilting.

You will need:

• A suitable pot for your topiary arrangement
• Floral foam for filling the pot
• Floral foam ball (small enough to hold in both hands)
• Wooden stick or pole (no thicker than a broomstick)
• Sheet moss
• A rose petal garland (a wired garland works best)
• Floral wire
• Pliers
• Glue gun
• Loose petals (optional)

Method:

• Start by preparing your pot. Cut your foam to size and apply hot glue to the bottom. This will hold the foam in place. Fill any gaps with smaller pieces of foam and secure some sheet moss on top so that the foam is not seen.
• Secure the moss in place using wire. Cut pieces of wire and fold them into a hairpin shape before inserting them.
• Cover the foam ball with moss using the same technique as you did when covering the pot.
• Wrap the moss-covered ball with the floral garland. There is no need to follow any specific pattern. Just wrap the garland around until the entire ball is covered. Don’t worry about small gaps because the moss is there to cover the foam.If necessary, you can use a few more wire pins to hold the flowers in place.
• Apply hot glue to the one end of the stick (about an inch) and insert the stick into the foam ball.
• Apply hot glue to the other end of the stick and insert into the centre of the pot. You can decide how tall you want your topiary to be.
• If you like, you can glue some loose petals around the base and along the margin of the pot.
