Keep your lilies fresh for longer

Lilies are gorgeous blooms that are loved around the world. There are many different types of lilies available and they can be displayed on their own or along with other flowers like roses and carnations. Like other fresh cut flowers, when you receive a bouquet, you want to do everything possible to keep your lilies fresh for as long as possible. Here are some essential steps to follow in order to help them last longer.

Prepare their stems

As soon as the bouquet arrives, you need to prepare the stems. This means that you should remove any wrapping material and place them straight in some fresh water. Now you have time to prepare a vase. Make sure it’s clean and add fresh water. Trim each lily stem at a 45 degree angle. This helps with absorption and you are creating a fresh new surface area which will make it easier for the stems to suck up water and nutrients. Try cutting the stems underwater so that air bubbles don’t enter the stem when trimming them. Remove lower leaves while you’re at it.

Keeping extra plant material out of the vase water helps slow bacterial growth and this will help keep your lilies fresher for longer.

Keep out of the sun

While plants enjoy sun and benefit from daily sunlight, cut flowers do not. Keep your lilies fresh by keeping them out of the direct sun. Place them on a table where they will brighten the room but not feel the heat of the sun.

Add water

One of the most important factors involved in keeping lilies fresh is ensuring that they have enough water. If you notice that the water level is getting low, you can top it up. However, you should change the water completely after a couple of days. Check the stems for bacterial growth while changing the water. Bacteria can clog the stems and cause them to perish prematurely. If this is the case, you will need to trim the stems again to create a fresh, clean surface again.

Remove pollen

Most types of lilies have pollen that is easy to remove. The main exception is the calla lily. Removing the pollen can help keep lilies fresh for longer. It is also great if you want to avoid the pollen from messing on the table and floor below.

With these tips in mind, you will keep your lilies fresh and beautiful for as long as possible. Remember to always buy quality flowers from reputable florists who stand by their products. If the bouquet arrives and the flowers are already wilting or damaged, this bouquet will not last very long and it’s important that you do not accept such a delivery.
