How to keep bugs away from plants and flowers

One of the most disappointing things that can happen to your plants and flowers is a bug infestation. Different insects prefer different plants and it’s important to know how to get rid of these bugs before the multiply out of control and destroy your plant. Here are some remedies you should keep in mind.

Flies and gnats

Gnats and flies don’t necessarily seem like much of of a pest to your plants and flowers but they are. The larvae feed on the roots of various plants so it’s best to get rid of the flying pests while you can. Look for a spray that contains Acephate. You should spray the bugs while they are flying rather than spraying the plants. You can also allow it to settle on the soil but don’t use too much or it can harm the plant.

Nematodes

These bugs can do some serious harm to your plants and flowers by feeding on the leaves and roots. Unfortunately, the only pesticide that works on them can only be purchased if you have a special license. So, as soon as you notice them, you should discard the plant.

Mealy bugs and plant lice

Plant lice might be small but they often carry viruses and and they tend to come in large numbers. Mealy bugs are about the same size as plant lice and they too can do plenty of damage to your plants and flowers. 70% isopropyl alcohol is good for getting rid of both of these pests in their early stages. Simply dab the alcohol on the bugs with a cotton swab. Once cleaned, hold the plant upside down and rinse the leaves. Acephate is best for more serious infestations.

Slugs and snails

While one snail might not kill all the plants and flowers in your garden, several will certainly take their toll. You can physically remove them from your plants if you see them. You can also set traps in your garden.

Beetles

Beetles love chewing on the leaves of your plants and flowers. If you have an infestation, you need to take action right away. You can remove them manually if there aren’t too many yet. Alternatively, you can mix 1 teaspoon of Malathion with a gallon of water and spray this solution on your plants. You may notice that the solution will alter the colour of your plants but this is not permanent so there’s nothing to worry about.

The best remedy of all is to keep a close eye on all of your plants and flowers. By taking action quickly, you can minimise the damage and it is also that much easier to get rid of them. It’s also good to take note of the types of bugs that your plants are bound to attract. Be prepared and get ready to take action at the earliest signs of a problem.
