Celebrating somebody’s retirement

When one of your coworkers is retiring, it’s customary to give them a memorable send off. For many, it could be the last time you will see each other which makes this occasion both happy and a little sad.

The first thing many people do is plan a party. It doesn’t need to be anything big. You could simply stick around at the office and enjoy some bubbly while talking about all the most memorable moments over the years. If you prefer, you could meet up at a local restaurant and celebrate over dinner. There is no right or wrong way of celebrating. It all comes down to budget and personal preference.

Another great idea is to spoil them on their last day of work. You can do this with fresh flowers as well as other gifts. These gifts can be bought individually or you can all put money together to buy something more extravagant. Either way, the lucky recipient will be surprised! Remember, it’s a good idea to opt for something they can enjoy now as well as something that they can enjoy for years to come. For example, if you send fresh flowers, you could also put money together to buy them a special watch or jewellery that they wear and think of all the wonderful staff members they grew so fond of over the years.

Remember, no matter the gift you choose, you should also buy a special card. Your flowers might come with a card included but it may not have enough space for everyone to sign. You will need to be a bit sneaky when passing the card around to everyone at work! You don’t want the secret to get out.

Finally, you can make something extra special and sentimental by putting together a photo album or scrapbook. Include photos of various staff members with their names and funny quotes as well as pictures of the retiring recipient hard at work. They can look through this book of memories whenever they are feeling nostalgic.
