Get creative with summer flowers

After getting through a winter that seemed to take forever, spring finally arrives and summer is hot on its heels.  When temperatures rise, days grow longer and the sound of birds singing becomes a regular occurrence, it’s all the more reason to celebrate!  The smell of fresh flowers fills the air and there’s nothing better than bringing the beauty of the outdoors into your home.  Summer is the time to make the most of the flowers that grow in your garden so that you can afford to splash out and order flowers from your florist even more often during the colder winter months when your garden becomes dormant.

When using your own home grown flowers to create a flower arrangement, it is obviously much cheaper than having to pay for them.  You can really experiment with different styles, themes and colours.  Simply pick some sample flowers and place them beside one another to see if they work well together or clash.

When you think of summer, what is the first thing that comes to you mind?  You most likely imagine hot sunny days, perhaps the beach or your favourite brightly coloured fruits.  Use your own personal impression of summer to create a summer themed bouquet.  If you want to make your own beach themed arrangement, simply place the flowers you like most in a clear glass vase.  Line the bottom of the vase with some sea sand and shells.  You can even place some plastic or glass fish inside the vase for that extra special touch.  Depending on what type of fish you use, you will either need to weigh them down or suspend them from the rim of the vase.  Use fishing line so that the lines are invisible and the fish look as natural as possible.

Another great idea is to  add some fruit to your vase.  Fruits like limes, oranges and lemons look great when sliced and placed inside the vase.  Just be sure not to overfill the vase.  You will only need a few slices to create the effect you desire.  If you have a large vase, you could even place the whole fruits inside.  Hard berries like cherries and cranberries can also do the trick.  You should always make sure that the colour of your vase fillers suits that colours of your flowers.

One more idea, if you want something truly spectacular, is to use LED lights.  You will need the waterproof variety of course and they are available in a wide variety of colours.  Submerge them in the vase to really bring your flowers to life during an evening event.  Green and blue LED lights suit an arrangement with a beach theme in particular.  If you add fish to the vase, the lights will reflect on them and make them shimmer even more!
