Fun flower sandwiches for the kids
Getting kids to eat anything other than their favourite snacks can be a real challenge for parents. Have you noticed how many children’s food items on the market have fun shapes? Well, this is because the shape of the food helps make meal time fun! Of course, you might not be a fan of all those processed foods which is where flower sandwiches come in. Make them for lunch or even parties. Use different fillers to ensure a balanced meal.
The first thing you will need is a selection of cheeses, meats, salad items, and don’t forget the peanut butter and jam! Once you have all of your toppings and combinations, it’s time to lay out the bread. Choose how many sandwiches you want with each filling.
When using peanut butter and jam, you should spread a thin layer of peanut butter on both slices of bread. Add some jam in the middle and use a flower-shaped cookie cutter to get that flower shape. The reason for using peanut butter on both slices is to prevent the bread from turning soggy from the jam. Jam can also start to crystallize on the bread when in direct contact and the peanut butter helps prevent this.
When using cheese and sandwich meats, you should make sure that they are thinly sliced. Soft cream cheese also works really well and you can even add various types of leafy greens too! If you like, you can finish off your flower sandwich with half a cherry tomato in the centre for even more fun colour.
Remember to keep each type of sandwich on a separate platter and always work with a clean chopping board or wipe down the work surface before you start making a new sandwich. If you want to keep your sandwiches soft and fresh for a few hours before the guests arrive, you can top with some chopped lettuce, cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge.
