Common mistakes when caring for flower beds

You probably know by now that there are a number of steps that you need to take in order to ensure a long life for your cut flowers.  You can’t expect somebody to send you flowers and all you do is pop them in a vase and you’re done.  The same can be said for flower beds in your garden.  Some people have the impression that they just need to plant whatever kind of flowers they like and water them.  Just as cut flowers from your florist can benefit from being treated properly, so too will your flower bed benefit from the proper care.

The first thing you need to remember is to give each plant enough space.  It’s understandable that you would want a full and attractive garden.  However, when you plant your flowers, they will more than likely grow and need space to extend.  When you purchase seeds or small flowering plants, check online or with a professional as to how large they grow.  Once you know this, you will know how much space to leave for growth.

Another common mistake that gardeners make is to plant their flowers in the wrong part of the garden.  Not every part of your garden is suitable for flowers and each flowering plant has its own preferences.  For example, some like shade or partial sun while others do better in full sun conditions.  So, first look at the area of your garden that you wish to transform into a flower bed and then search for flowers that will thrive under those particular conditions.  Again, a simple search online or a trip to your local nursery will answer all your questions in a flash.

You should also make sure that the soil in your garden is suitable for the plants you intend on growing.  Just as different plants prefer different amounts of sunlight, so too do they prefer different types of soil.  You should be able to find a kit at your local nursery that you can use to test the soil yourself.  If you are starting from scratch, then you can really create the conditions you desire.  However, if you have a flower bed that you are adding to, you should invest in such a kit rather than guessing and possibly wasting money on plants that won’t survive.

Finally, many people forget to water their flower beds or they water at the wrong time of the day.  It is important to water your flowers in the morning or evening rather than in the middle of the day.  If you water in the middle of the day, the plants and flowers will burn.  Gardeners also make the mistake of over watering dried out flower beds and this causes the roots to rot.  Keep the soil moist at all times and you won’t have a problem with this.
