October is here and it’s a popular season for brides around the world. The mild temperatures make wearing a suit or elegant dress that much more bearable. Not to mention all the amazing colour changes that nature has to offer! If you are tying the knot in October, here are some superb flower tips for your big day.
Start by taking a look outside. Take note of all the colours you see like rich shades of red, orange, and brown. You may notice the dark green leaves of evergreen trees and plants as well as some hints of purple here and there. When choosing the flowers for your big day, it’s great to embrace the season as well as the flowers that are in season.
Remember, we are past the days of choosing a single colour for our weddings. There is no need to limit yourself to a single colour when it comes to your bridesmaids’ dresses, flowers, and décor. These days, variety is welcome and you can choose a different colour dress for each of your bridesmaids if you like. During the month of October, some of the flowers that you will likely find at your local florist include: alstromeria, calla lilies, freesia, delphinium, gerbera daisies, irises, magnolias, and various orchids. Although not technically in season, roses are also always readily available throughout the year. Of course, if you are looking for a particular colour or type of rose, you might need to ask your florist to put in a special order.
The perfect flower arrangement is all about creating just the right balance of colour and texture. Contrasting colours and textures are great for any October wedding arrangement. For example, you could pair some dark red (almost purple) roses with some orange calla lilies, off-white orchids (or another flower of choice), and some autumn foliage. The dark tones of the roses allows the calla lilies to really stand out and the lighter shade of the orchids help break up the overall darkness and give the bouquet a happier feel. You will also notice the textural contrast between the roses and the lilies. Roses have plenty of overlapping petals while callas only have a single modified petal with a very smooth appearance.
Feel free to add other accessories such as twigs (painted or left as is), berries, and even pine cones and other autumn accessories. If the bride wants to honour the memory of a loved one as she makes her way down the isle, she can attach one of that person’s belongings to the bouquet. For example, if she has lost her father and she has a ring or another item of his, she can have it attached to the bouquet with a silk ribbon.
Last but not least, don’t forget to have your florist make the delivery on the day or the night before if you are planning a morning wedding. All of your handheld bouquet should be kept in water until you are ready to make your way to the church and you should keep them in water at the reception until you are ready to toss the bouquet.
