Flower craft – how to make potpourri

Potpourri is not only wonderful for giving a room that fresh scent but can also make a lovely decorative addition to your home. The best part of this flower craft is that you don’t have to buy potpourri when you can make it yourself.

Prepare your plant material

The first step you will need to take is to prepare your plant materials. Potpourri is made from dried plant material. So this means you need to select the perfect plant material and make sure it is completely dry before using it. Flower petals make the best potpourri. Rose petals work especially well. If you want to dry the flowers faster, you will need to remove the petals and spread them out on a flat surface. They should be placed in a warm, dry place to speed up the drying process. You may need to stir the petals every couple of days before they dry completely. You will need some patience when it comes to this flower craft since you don’t want to use even slightly moist plant material.

Inspect your flowers

When selecting flowers for your this flower craft, it’s important to inspect the flowers for any significant damage. If the flowers have started to rot, they will not be suitable. Broken or dented petals should be fine. You really only have rot and mould to worry about.

Choose essential oils

Now that all the plant material is ready, it’s time to choose the perfect perfume. This often depends on the season and your personal preferences. There are many essential oils available today, and you can even make your own blends. Some examples include vanilla, cloves, cinnamon and peppermint.

Use a spray bottle

While some might say you should add a few drops to your potpourri, this can be tricky. You may end up adding too much, or you may end up with some petals that are very concentrated and some that have no scent at all. Instead, you should add some oil to a spray bottle of water and gently mist the petals. Give them a little stir to mix them up. Let them rest and check the strength. If you want a stronger scent, you can spray them again. You should always spray only lightly.

When you notice the scent wearing off after several days, you can spray them again to freshen them up. You can do this repeatedly for as long as the petals maintain their integrity. Once they break up substantially, you can follow the steps of this flower craft again to make more.
