Choosing between silk and fresh flowers for a corsage or boutonniere

Corsages and boutonnieres can be made from fresh flowers or artificial flowers. When choosing between these two options, it’s important to understand the pros and cons of each. It’s not just about your personal preferences but also the weather conditions, and how long you need them to last.

Pros and cons of fresh flowers

There’s no disputing the amazing beauty of fresh flowers. Whether you chose a rose or an orchid, the fresh perfection will certainly stand out. In addition, many fresh cut flowers also have the most amazing fragrance.

Fresh flowers are generally quite affordable. Your florist should have a number of options from which you can choose and, for small floral designs, perfection is key. Not only will your florist select the best fresh stem but they will also put it together with some smaller flowers, perhaps some foliage, and possibly even a ribbon. Corsage and boutonniere designs can be created specifically with your outfit in mind which means that there are literally hundreds, or even thousands, of possibilities.

The one downside of fresh blooms is the fact that they don’t last forever. They will need to be stored properly before you wear them and, once the night is over, you cannot wear this corsage again. You also need to be careful not to damage the flowers since this could cause them to perish prematurely.

Pros and cons of silk flowers

Silk flowers, unlike fresh ones, will last indefinitely. They can be purchased in advance and they need only be stored in a dry, cool place. Keep your artificial flowers away from direct sunlight so that they don’t start to fade. There’s obviously no need to water or refrigerate these flowers.

A possible downside is the fact that not all silk flowers are made equal. While some look incredible realistic, others look obviously fake. Quality artificial blooms can cost more than the real thing but, due to the perfect appearance and ability to last for months (or even years), it’s more than worthwhile. You can even store your corsage or boutonniere for future use.
