Silk flower arranging advice

Creating a silk flower arrangement is quite different from a fresh flower bouquet. You will need to take extra special care at first but it is certainly worth the effort. Once you have created your beautiful bouquet, all you need to do to maintain it is some occasional dusting. Dusting on a regular basis will prevent the dust particles from becoming sticky and difficult to remove. It is also best to dust your bouquet outdoors so that you don’t spread dust throughout your home.

Dried foam base

Before you begin creating your silk flower bouquet, you need to prepare the base. Floral foam is perfect for holding the stems in place. You will also need to select the appropriate vase so that you can fit the foam inside. The foam should not be taller than the vase itself. You want to conceal the foam rather than allowing it to remain visible. Before inserting the foam into the vase, make sure that you test one of your stems to make sure that they are easy enough to insert.

Cutting foam

Now that you have the right foam and you vase is ready, you can cut the foam to size. Use a sharp knife to do so. Putty knives work particularly well and they don’t make much of a mess either. Take your time when cutting floral foam. It can chip and break if you are not careful.

Foam placement

The next step in creating a silk flower bouquet is to place your foam inside the vase. Make sure that you press the foam into the bottom of the vase and you can add more layers on top if need be. This will ensure that it is completely secure. Use hot glue to secure the foam in place.

Concealing the foam

Since you don’t want anyone to see your floral foam, you will need to conceal it. You can use moss to do so. It will give your silk flower arrangement amazing texture and cover up the unattractive foam. Cover the foam before adding any of your flower stems. You want to make sure that you give it a good layer of coverage before adding the blooms.

Cutting the flower stems

Now it’s time to cut your flower stems so that they can be easily inserted in the foam. Cut them at an angle and insert each stem one by one. If you want to make sure that they are extra secure, you can add hot glue to the bottom inch of each stem before inserting it. If you are creating a tall silk flower arrangement, you need to make sure that you don’t not cut your stems too short. You will need to insert a fair portion of the stem into the foam in order to ensure stability.

Fluff up your flowers

Once you are done arranging your silk flower bouquet, it’s time to fluff up those petals and spread the blooms out a bit to ensure complete coverage. It will also help give your bouquet a more natural look.

Remember to display your silk flower arrangement in a safe spot away from any source of heat or direct sunlight. UV rays will cause your blooms to fade and heat can damage the petals too. You will not need to water your blooms but you will need to tend to them regularly in order to keep them looking like the real thing.
