Repurposing flowers

A bouquet of fresh flowers usually costs a reasonable amount of money. Even if you opt for the cheapest flowers, you always want to make sure that you get the most value for money. This is why it’s important to take proper care of your cut flowers and, if possible do whatever is necessary to repurpose them.

The first thing to remember about repurposing flowers is the fact that you need to choose your method of preservation in advance. So, if you are planning on drying certain flowers, you should not wait until they have wilted before you get to work. Flowers like roses are best dried upside down so that they maintain their shape. Other types of flowers, like daisies, are better suited for pressing. Again, you need to pluck these flowers from the bunch before they start to deteriorate. Wilted flowers can still be pressed but, if they are turning brown, you might not want to use them.

Dried flowers can be repurposed as dried flower bouquets. Simply place them in your vase or container of choice and display anywhere in your home. Like fresh flowers, you should keep your dried flowers away from direct sunlight, wind, and excessive heat. Dried flowers can also be attached to a firm piece of cardboard and framed. Box framed flowers make for wonderful sentimental works of art in your home.

Pressed flowers can be used in so many ways. You can make pressed flower pictures, use them to decorate cards or gifts, and even use them in decoupage designs. Store your pressed flowers in an airtight container and keep them away from light, heat, and moisture. Make sure that you layer them with wax paper in between so that they don’t get damaged.

If you have flowers or flower petals that have exceeded their lifespan and you are not able to press or dry the whole flower, you can take it apart and let the petals dry. Use these petals in various forms of arts and crafts or to make your own potpourri!

Remember, flowers are not only beautiful when they come fresh from the florist or your garden. They still have plenty of beauty to offer for months or even years provided they are preserved in the right way.
