Making your own floral soap

The bathroom is usually one of the more difficult areas of your home to decorate. It’s often lacking in space and you might not want to clutter your worktops with decorative items when you need them to hold essential items. Small flower arrangements and potted plants can work well but if you want to add colour in a practical way, why not make your own flower petal soap? Not only is this flower craft fun and easy, but it’s also a great way of making your own gifts for friends and loved ones.

You need:

Silk flower petals (small petals are preferred)

Essential oil of your choice

Hard glycerine

Bowl (microwave safe)

Tweezers

Wax paper

Plastic container or gift bags for storage

Steps to follow:

  • Separate your silk flower petals from the flower stems. Make sure that you do so with care so that you don’t damage them.

  • Put the glycerine in a bowl. It needs to be microwave safe because you will need to heat up the glycerine for about 1 minute or until the glycerine melts.

  • Add some of your favourite essential oil to the glycerine. Do so slowly and remember that essential oils are concentrated so you don’t need to add too much.

  • You can place up to 4 petals in the mixture at a time. Use tweezers to press them down into the mixture.

  • Let the petals soak a little to absorb the glycerine mixture.

  • Remove the petals carefully and slowly using your tweezers.

  • Plae them on some wax paper and allow to dry.

  • Once dry, store them in a cool, dry place until use.

Extra tips:

  • Make sure that you prepare your work space before getting started. In other words, have all of your materials ready and wax paper set out on a tray.

  • Make sure that your petals dry on a flat surface.

  • Use a sealed container to preserve the scent of your flower petal soaps.

  • Never store in the sun or any warm place. Heat causes the glycerine to melt and the sun will make the flower petals fade.

This flower craft is perfect for experimenting with different colours, types of petals, and scents. You can even combine various oils to create something that’s unique and captivating. If you are looking for inspiration, you could use the scent associated with the petals you choose. For example, you can use rose essential oil if you are using rose petals.
