How to make your own cascading bouquet

Cascading bouquets are one of the most impressive floral designs of all. These types of arrangements can be made using a number of types of flowers but, for the most part, orchids are the top choice. These flowers are the longest lasting of all cut flowers but they still need water and cannot be left out of water for extended periods of time. Orchids can also be delicate which means that you need to take some care when handling them. If you are concerned about your flowers wilting prematurely, you will be pleased to know that there are a number of wonderful, realistic-looking silk flowers on the market. They don’t come cheap but you really do get what you pay for! If you want to make your own cascadiing bouquet, here’s how:

You will need:

  • Phalaenopsis orchids (about two long stems)
  • Tropical foliage
  • Floral wire
  • Floral tape
  • Decorative ribbon

Method:

  • Calculate the length of the bouque based on the height of the bride. The taller the bride, the longer the bouquet needs to be.
  • Cut a few of the flowers off the one end of each of your orchid stems until you reach the length you desire.
  • Wrap the stems together and secure with floral wire.
  • Make sure that you leave enough room for the bouque handle.
  • Attach a wire to extend the stems of each of the flowers that were cut off.
  • Wrap each of the wire stems up with floral wire to make them look more like stems.
  • Attach each of these wire stems to the main stem and make sure that you make a large cluster at the top and taper them down towards the bottom.
  • The loose stems can be held in place with floral tape.
  • Add tropical leaves one by one and make sure that you use wire and tape to reinforce the stems and ensure that they are held in place. Add enough leaves to fill in any gaps.
  • Add a ribbon around the handle area as the final touch and feel free to let the ends of the ribbon trail down to add to that cascading effect.
