How to tend to tropical flowers

Tropical flowers make excellent floral displays and they really brighten up the room. Whether you want to decorate a party with a tropical theme or you simply want to add some bold colours to the room, you can always be sure that a tropical bouquet will do the trick. When you receive a tropical arrangement, it’s important to know how to keep these blooms happy so that they last as long as possible.

Temperature

The first thing to note is that tropical flowers, even cut ones, tend to prefer moderate to warm temperatures. If you place them in very cold spaces, they don’t tend to do quite as well. Now, this does not mean that you should turn up the heat or place them in direct sunlight either. They are cut flowers, after all, and they need to be treated as such. Just make sure that you don’t store or display them in near freezing conditions.

Water

Keep your tropical flowers happy by changing the vase water often. The more often you change the water, the less time bacteria has to grow in the water and on the stems. Inspect the stems regularly for any slimy feeling. This is bacterial growth and you will need to trim the stems if you notice this. What happens is bacteria grows on the stem and especially on the bottom of the stem. The bacteria eventually becomes a kind of plug and inhibits absorption which will cause your flowers to perish prematurely.

Steer clear

There are several things that you should be careful of when displaying tropical flowers. Firstly, keep them away from any sources of heat like fire places or heaters. Secondly, avoid placing them near fans or air conditioners. Finally, make sure that your pets and/or children will not be able to reach the bouquet. Some tropical flowers and foliage can prove toxic so it’s worth doing some research if this is a concern.

Now that you know all of the top care tips for tropical flowers, why not treat yourself to a colourful bunch? Sure, it might be the beginning or autumn, but there’s no reason why you cannot have one last burst of bold colours and beauty in your home!
