Get your garden ready for spring

Although the cold weather usually only lasts for a few months, it can often feel like an eternity. When the temperatures finally start to rise, it’s time to get your garden back in shape. Here are some easy steps to follow to get your garden ready for spring.

Check your tools

Gardening requires a variety of tools which is why it’s important to check and inspect them before you really need them! Any tools used for digging need to be checked for sharpness. Now, they don’t need to be quite as sharp as the knives in your kitchen, but a sharpened edge makes your work that much easier. Test the handles and make the necessary repairs and replacements.

Time to clean up

Once all the snow has melted, it’s time to take stock of your garden and check for damage. If any plants have perished, it’s a good idea to remove them along with decaying leaves and other plant material. If you want to make your own compost, you can place all of this material on a heap in a designated corner out of the way. Cover with a tarp so that your compost heap is not an eyesore.

Fertilize the soil

Spring is when your plants, flowers, and trees will start to come back to life. This is why they need a nutritional boost. If the ground is still frozen, wait just a few more days or weeks for it to thaw out.

Pruning

Some plants benefit from pruning in the spring. Pruning should always be done properly according to the type of plant. This will encourage growth in the warmer months and it will also make your garden look neat and tidy.

Plan for planting

If you want to add more plants or flowers to your garden, you will need to plan your garden properly. Choose between annuals and perennials based on your personal preferences and budget. Make sure that you plant the right plants in the right areas of your garden based on conditions like sunlight. Remember, different plants enjoy different types of nutrients. By planting complementary plants near one another, you ensure that they do not compete for food and they will all thrive.

Once your garden is in shape, don’t forget to water regularly and consider adding mulch in some areas of your garden. Mulching not only looks lovely, but it also helps retain moisture in the soil so you won’t need to water as often. Enjoy your flowers and make the most of all of your blooms by plucking fresh flowers to decorate your home!
