If you are looking for a lovely addition for your own home or if you want to surprise somebody special, you should consider a pineapple plant. Of course, like any potted plant, proper care is important. The good news is that pineapple plants are not too difficult to grow and all you need to do is make sure that you tend to a few basic needs.

Sunlight

Since pineapples usually grow in warmer regions with plenty of light, it stands to reason that your pineapple plant should be placed in an area that receives quite a bit of bright, direct sunlight. You might need to choose one location for the summer months and move it during the winter when light levels are lower.

Flowering

Something you might not know about your pineapple plant is the fact that it is actually a type of bromeliad. You will notice that your main plant will only produce a single fruit. However, you should still take care of this plant since it will produce baby plants. Each of which will grow and produce their own fruits and new plants. The new baby plants will start to grow around the base of the main plant so be sure to take proper care of the parent plant if you want healthy young plants.

Temperatures

Just as sunlight is important, so too is the temperature of the room. They generally prefer temperatures that range between 22 and 28 degrees Celcius. That said, you should avoid placing the plant near any sources of heat. While they will enjoy a moderate to warm environment, direct heat will not do them any favours.

Watering

Water is an essential part of plant care and your pineapple plant is no exception. An interesting fact about these plants is the fact that they absorb some water through their leaves. They also do not need a lot of water. So, you should wait for the soil to dry out a little before watering. You can water the leaves and the soil but take care not to overwater.

As you can see, your pineapple plant will not require daily attention or particularly special care. Make sure that when you propagate the main plant that you use the right potting soil. The soil should offer sufficient drainage so that the roots are not resting in wet soil for extended periods of time.
