Just like most things in life, we come to learn supposed facts about fresh flowers that turn out to be less than accurate. Here are some of the most common flower myths and misconceptions that many people still believe today.

Keep flowers fresh with sugar

When you receive a bouquet of fresh flowers, you already know that they will not last forever. Of course, there are some steps you can take to keep them beautiful for as long as possible. Many people believe that adding sugar to vase water keeps flowers looking their best and this is partly true. While the flowers will enjoy the sugar, it also encourages bacteria to grow more rapidly in the vase water. A better option is to add a flower preservative to the water instead. These packages include nutrients for the flowers and they inhibit the growth of bacteria.

Don’t keep flowers in bedrooms

While certain potted plants absorb plenty of oxygen at night, there is no need to worry about fresh flowers doing the same. The amount of oxygen that some cut flowers may absorb at night is minimal compared to the amount of oxygen they release in the day. Especially if you sleep with your bedroom door open.

Flowers are no good for allergies

Yes, it’s true that there are some types of fresh flowers that will have many people sneezing non-stop. However, not all flowers cause allergic reactions. Those with heavy pollen, for example, will not have such an extreme effect (if any) on the recipient because the pollen does not float through the air. In other cases, such as lilies, you can ask your florist to remove the pollen before sending the bouquet!

Forget about seasons

It’s always important to consider the seasons when planning an event, such as a wedding, or when looking for the best flower deals. While we are fortunate enough to enjoy the benefits of floral imports and greenhouse growers, these blooms are generally more expensive than seasonal flowers. Don’t neglect to consider the season when planning or placing your flower order.

Plants are dangerous for pets

This is partly true but there are many exceptions. Some plants can be toxic to cats and others can harm your dog. This is not true for all fresh flowers and plants, however, and all you need to do is a little online research. There are plenty of safe plants and flowers that you can enjoy without worrying about your pets.

Roses are always romantic

While red roses send a message of romance, this is not the case for all roses. For example, yellow roses are perfect for friends. It’s also worth noting that other red flowers, like carnations and tulips, are also associated with romance. So, for your anniversary or Valentine’s Day, red roses are not your only option!

I don’t need to water my cactus

While cacti and succulents require minimal water, this does not mean that they don’t need water at all. During winter, they will require less watering but in the summer months, you should monitor the soil and water as needed.

Now that you know the truth about fresh flowers, flower care and potted plants, you can teach your friends and family too! Understanding the facts is the most important part of plant and flower care. Not to mention the fact that you will get that much more joy out of your bouquets and potted plants.
