One of the biggest mistakes we make when it comes to caring for our plants is overwatering. Fortunately, there are a few basic steps and tricks that we can use to prevent this from happening. Here are some essential plant watering tips to keep in mind.

Test the soil

Dip your finger into the soil of each of your plants. You don’t need to go all the way, just until the first knuckle. If the soil is moist, you do not need to water. If it feels try, it’s time to water.

Drainage holes

It is crucial that excess water be given a way out. Soil can only absorb so much water and you must make sure that your plants are placed in planters with suitable drainage holes at the bottom. In addition, after watering, you should allow the plant to stand for a few minutes at least. Then remove the drainage tray and empty it. You do not want the drainage tray full of water either. So this is also essential in order to avoid overwatering plants.

Weighing your plant

Another trick that many plant enthusiasts use is the weight method. Water your plants before picking them up and estimating their weight or you can weigh them on a kitchen or bathroom scale. After several days, pick them up or weigh them again to determine how dry the soil has become. Dry soil weighs significantly less than damp soil which is why you need to pay attention to the numbers. You can even create a list for your plants and use this weight list as your guide.

Keep in mind that plants require different watering schedules. In addition, these schedules will vary depending on the weather conditions. You should also pay attention to the condition of the plant and its overall health when determining a watering routine.
