Using berries in flower arrangements

When it comes to creating flower arrangements, it’s good to remember that you do not strictly rely on flowers and foliage. Berries also make excellent additions to fresh flower displays. When working with different types of berries, there are a few things to remember.

Some of the most commonly used berries include:

  • Brunia
  • China Berry
  • Hypericum
  • Juniper Berry
  • Mistletoe
  • Rose Hips
  • Seeded Eucalyptus
  • Snowberry
  • Waxberry
  • Winterberry

How to preserve berries

Berries are fruit which means that they will eventually rot. Since you don’t want this to occur prematurely, you will need to take some steps to preserve them. Firstly, you need to inspect your berry stems and discard any berries that are damaged or starting to decay. You can choose to remove the berries from the stems, apply petroleum jelly, and buff them. You can even spray-paint them different colours if you like. If you want to leave the berries on the stems, you can simply replace the stems as soon as the berries start to decay. This will help keep your flower arrangement looking fresh and beautiful.

Important precautions

As beautiful as they are, some berries are actually toxic and they can cause significant harm to pets as well as humans. If you choose to send flowers that include some berries, you need to make sur that they are not toxic and you should also include a card that tells the recipient about the type of berries and if any precautions need to be taken. Another alternative is to use artificial berries in your fresh flower arrangements. This will add colour and texture without the risk.
