Many people are under the impression that silk flowers do not require any special care. While fresh flowers need to be trimmed, have their water changed, and wilted stems removed, silk flowers do not require as much attention. That said, they do require some care from time to time in order to stay as beautiful as they were the day you bought them.
One of the main problems that people mention when it comes to silk flower care is that they can be a bit tricky to clean. This is largely due to the fact that many of us don’t know how these flowers should be cleaned. There are several ways of cleaning artificial flowers and each of these methods has its own set of pros and cons. One way is to use a duster to gently sweep away the dust. This should be done at least once a week to prevent dust from sticking to the flowers. This, unfortunately does mean that the dust will simply relocate somewhere else in your home. If you do this outside, however, you can enjoy the benefits without spreading dust throughout your home. Compressed air sprays are also used from time to time but they are a bit harsh and can cause more harm than good. If your silk flowers are particularly delicate, you should not use compressed air.
Dust is attracted to moisture so, if you dunk your flowers in cool water (not warm or hot), it will help rinse the dust off nice and gently. Once they have been rinsed, you should let them dry. Hanging them upside down can help them maintain their shape while allowing water to drip out. Make sure that they are not left in the sun since this will cause them to fade.
When your silk flowers are not on display, you will need to store them properly in order to prolong their life and beauty. Make sure that you clean them thoroughly and let them dry completely before placing in an airtight container. Do not force all of them in a small container. Either find a large container suitable for holding all of them or use more than one container. Store in a dry place and out of any sunlight since light causes fading.
