How to transport flowers in winter

If you plan to order Christmas flowers and you want to make that flower delivery in person, you should take the weather into account. When opting for a flower delivery by your florist, you can rest asssured that they will be transported with absolute care. That said, even though it might seem easy to opt for a florist delivery directly to the recipient, there’s no substitute for personal interactions.

Another important consideration to remember when planning your Christmas flower order, is the fact that this is a very busy time of year for any florist and they most likely will not make any deliveries on Christmas itself. You might even find it tough to arrange for flowers to be delivered the day before Christmas if you don’t get your order in weeks in advance! If you want to present your loved ones with flowers on Christmas, then you will need to have them delivered to you before making the delivery yourself the following day.

When delivering flowers yourself, you need to take the weather into account. In most cases, transporting fresh flowers in winter is much the same as doing so in the summer. Of course, in the summer you will need to beware of the harsh sunlight and direct contact with cold air from your air conditioner. On the other hand, in winter, you need not worry too much about the sun but you will need to keep your flowers a fair distance from the hot air coming from your heater. By all means, put the heat on but close the vents or point them in another direction so that they do not send hot air in the direction of your fresh bouquet.

You also need to make sure that you offer your flowers plenty of support. Placing them flat on the seat of your car is not a good idea. Not only will this compress the flowers closest to the seat, but it will also mean that you cannot keep them in water. If the drive is particularly long or if you get stuck in traffic, the flowers will be without water for an extended period of time and this can be quite harmful. Instead, you should place your fresh flowers in a vase with just enough water to cover the bottoms of their stems. Secure the vase in a box or crate and place other items like foam, pillows, towels, or anything you can find to hold the vase firmly in place. Place the box on the floor behind the front passanger seat. This way it’s away from the heat vents too. You can do the same when it comes to a potted plant. Avoid the soil from spilling by securing the plant in a firm box or crate for extra support. You need not water the plant before the trip. If the soil is moist, it will be just fine for the ride.

Wind can also damage flowers and plants. Even if you place the pot or vase on the floor of your car, the wind can still have a devastating effect. In the winter it shouldn’t be too difficult keeping those windows closed which means that wind really should not be a problem. Don’t forget that the windows of your car are also very cold which is another reason to keep your flowers or plants on the floor of your car while transporting them. Direct contact with such cold surfaces can cause severe damage to any plant or flower.

Another option, of course, is to have a loved one travel along with you and have them hold the bouquet or plant. Again, keeping your flowers away from direct heat, wind, and cold surfaces is still extremely important. Once the flower delivery has been made, the bouquet should be properly conditioned and watered. This means removing the wrapping, trimming the stems, and adding floral food to the vase water. With regards to potted plants, if you have recently watered the plant, then you might want to let the recipient know so that they can follow the proper watering schedule.
