Tips for planting tulip bulbs

Tulips are one of the most popular flowers of all. Florists around the world do their best to keep these blooms in stock as much as possible – no matter the weather. If need be, these flowers are imported in order to ensure availability.

The best time to plant

The first thing you need to remember is that bulbs need to go through a period of dormancy before they can grow and eventually bloom. This is why autumn planting is best. The bulb remains in the ground during the colder months and, when the weather warms up, they begin to grow. Remember to do your planting late in autumn. In other words, you should wait until October or November. If the weather is particularly warm, you might want to wait until the first couple of weeks of December.

Growing tulips

If you are planning on growing tulips, you should follow these steps:

  • Take the time to prepare the soil before you plant. The soil needs to offer good drainage.
  • Add bulb fertilizer to the soil to help your tulips grow.
  • Make sure that you make each hole two to three times as deep as the bulbs are tall.
  • Plant the bulbs the right side up.
  • Once planted, water your bulbs to settle the soil. Do not overwater or they could rot.
  • Top the soil with some mulch after planting to keep your bulbs happy and safe during the winter.

Remember, once you have successfully grown your first tulips, you can be sure that they will bloom year after year if they are properly cared for. You will also have your own personal supply when you need tulips to decorate your home.
