Repurposing flowers and decorative items

Do you hate the idea of having to throw out flowers once they start to wilt? Well, if you enjoy repurposing household items, you will love this fun decorative idea! Not only can you put your favourite flowers to good use, but you can also use some household items that would otherwise be tossed out.

Firstly, before you begin, you will need to select some flowers that will not fall apart too easily. Roses are ideal and similar hardy blooms. Choose brightly coloured flowers so that they hold their colour. Now, you need to preserve them. For best results, wax your flowers. This involves melting wax and dipping your flowers in the liquid wax before allowing them to dry and harden. If you’re not up for this task, you could always dry the blooms out. Hang them upside down so that they hold their shape.

Secondly, you will need some kind of container like an old wine crate. Stain or paint the wooden crate so that it complements the colours of the bouquet that you have preserved. It’s often better to opt for a lighter paint because your flowers will darken in colour once dry.

Once your crate is ready, you can secure the bouquet to one of the lower corners. The crate should be placed or hung upright so that the longer sides are on the left and right while the shorter ends are on the top and bottom. Use floral wire to secure the flowers in place.

Now you can secure a photo to the middle of the crate, near the top. Get creative and secure it as you please. Make sure that you are able to remove the photo should you wish to replace it with another picture one day.

Add an ornament or trinket to the other lower corner of the box and you’re all set! Remember, the flowers, photo, and ornament should all suit a particular theme. For example, if you want to create a display to represent your wedding day, you should use some of the same flowers as those in your bridal bouquet. You should also include a wedding photo and the trinket could be the bride and groom from the top of your cake. Keep the theme consistent and, every now and then, you can replace the photo with another wedding photo.
