Orchid plant care to help it bloom

Whether you bought an orchid plant for yourself or you received one as a gift, it is important to care for this plant properly in order to help it bloom. Here are some of the basic orchid plant care tips and steps to follow in order to enjoy the most amazing bloom cycles.

Transparent pots

Many people overlook the importance of a transparent planter for their orchid plant. Not only does the transparent nature of the pot make it easier for you to assess the condition of the roots, but is also allows sunlight to reach them which is something every orchid needs.

Avoid potting soil

Your orchid plant does not need regular soil. Instead, you should look for special ‘soil’ for orchids and you can even add bark chips to the mix. These chips help with drainage and create space for the roots so that root rot does not occur.

A good soak

You should not water your orchid plant from the top. Instead, give it a good soak in some fresh water. Do this by placing the planter in a bucket of water and allow it to soak up as much water as necessary. Before you are done, allow any excess water to drain away before placing your orchid back in its usual spot. Take care not to overwater or water too often. Watering will be less frequent during the cooler months than in the summer and humidity is also an important condition to maintain in their environment.

Trimming the stem

Once the flowers fall from your orchid plant, you need to prune the plant. Trim the stem back to the third eye when this happens so that the plant does not waste any energy maintaining a flowerless stem. The eyes on the stem are little notches and they are very easy to identify.

By taking proper care of your orchid plant throughout the year, you can encourage it to grow and bloom year after year. Remember to repot as soon as you notice the plant has outgrown its current planter. You want to ensure that you do not restrict root growth.
