Why is it so important to choose the right greenery
When browsing through photos of flowers online, you will notice that your florist uses different types of foliage with different kinds of flowers. Many people don’t realise that there are just about as many types of foliage as there are flowers and it’s so important to make the right choice. It’s not just about the colour but also the shape and size of the foliage. When you add the right greenery to a bouquet, it will help complete the design and your flowers will stand out even more. Choosing the wrong leaves can have the opposite effect. Of course, no matter what, you should always take care not to add too much foliage or it can hide the beauty of the flowers in your bouquet.
The size of your bouquet will be a major determining factor when it comes to choosing foliage. The larger your bouquet and the larger the flowers, the larger the leaves can be. You don’t want huge leaves to overcrowd small flowers. Similarly, large flowers might look ridiculous when paired with tiny leaves. The theme of the bouquet is another factor to keep in mind. For a seasonal bouquet, you should also choose seasonal foliage. Magnolia leaves are much like any other except when they start to change colour. Their gorgeous brown colour makes them an excellent choice in an autumn arrangement. Don’t forget about the style of the arrangement and its shape. Vertical and horizontal arrangements will need very different types of foliage in order to help emphasize the shape of the floral display. Horizontal arrangements look great with vines whereas ferns are a good choice for vertical displays.
Remember, if you are ever in doubt about the best foliage to pair with your flowers, you can always skip it. Foliage is not an absolute must and you will notice that some flowers actually look better without all the extra green. Just think about a bunch of red roses with a touch of baby’s breath. Foliage can be added but it’s not a must.
