Flowers to welcome the Autumn

Summer is just about in our rear view mirror as we prepare for cooler conditions. September marks the onset of Autumn and there will be a noticeable drop in temperatures and shortening of days before we see the trees lose their leaves. While some may dislike the thought of saying farewell to summer, others know that this is yet another colourful season worth enjoying.

Gypsophila, or baby’s breath, hydrangeas, chrysanthemums, and gladioli are all in bloom during this time of the year. By choosing seasonal flowers from your florist, you will receive a bouquet that will last longer and ti will also prove to be a more appropriate form of floral décor. While hydrangeas can be displayed all on their own, they can also be used to create the base of a larger arrangement such as funeral crosses and other floral tributes. Some other flowers that might not be in season but are still readily available include roses, dahlias, and lilies.

When displaying flowers during this pleasant season, it’s also important to look for the right colours. The most popular floral shades during this time are those that remind us of rustic décor. This means that you should avoid bright colours and pastels. Instead, choose a pumpkin-like shade of orange, yellows that appear to lean towards mustard, and even some dark, deep reds. You can add some olive green to your bouquets and even some off-white flowers for a powerful colour contrast.

It’s not only important to choose the right flowers but you also need to make sure that they are displayed in the best kind of vase or container. Look for something that resembles a clay pot. The earthy tones of a clay vase is just what autumn flowers need. You can even use a hollowed out pumpkin or surround an ordinary glass vase with dried twigs and secure them with raffia. Your vase should resemble your natural surroundings during this season so this means that you should look for earthy colours and materials.

Remember that autumn bouquets are also made that much more appealing by adding accessories like sticks, pine cones, berries, and even some painted or dyed feathers. Place mini pumpkins on wooden skewers and add them to the bouquet or place pumpkins and gourds around the base of the vase for a beautiful seasonal look.
