Essential flower arranging tips

Creating your very own flower bouquets can be fun, rewarding and extremely therapeutic. Of course, it is also considered a form of art which means that there are a few important guidelines to keep in mind. Here are a few essential flower arranging tips to help ensure that your bouquet looks flawless.

Do the groundwork

Before you start flower arranging, you need to make sure that your blooms are ready for their new home. Flower arrangements last so much longer if they are properly prepared. The first thing to do is place your stems in fresh water so that they do not become dehydrated. Next, you will need to prepare your vase or floral foam. Trim your stems one by one before inserting them into the vase or foam. Cutting at an angle is best because it helps improve water absorption. Luke warm (not hot) water is recommended since it is more easily absorbed. Remove any lower leaves too. You don’t want anything other than the stems in the water.

Planning your design

There are a few aspects that you will need to consider when flower arranging. Your design will depend on various factors. So, before you begin, keep the following in mind:

  • Plan your colour scheme and use a colour wheel to find complementary colours.
  • Choose a variety of flowers so that you have larger focal blooms, medium mass flowers and small filler flowers. If you prefer, you can stick with mass and filler flowers like roses and baby’s breath. You don’t always need large focal blooms.
  • Giving your bouquet height is important but you should always make sure that the height is proportionate to the size and shape of the vase. You don’t want the stems to be too short and you also don’t want it to appear top heavy.
  • Add foliage in between and, just like your flowers, you should make sure that you use two or three types of foliage for a natural look.

Using seasonal flowers

One of the greatest ways of saving money when flower arranging is by choosing seasonal blooms. Seasonal flowers are fantastic because they are often cheaper and they tend to last longer too. Seasonal arrangements can also be used to celebrate specific occasions and give your home the perfect theme.

Finding the right location

Once you are done flower arranging, it’s time to find the perfect home for your bouquet. There are two main factors that you need to consider. Firstly, you should choose a spot where your bouquet will stand out and be appreciated. Secondly, you must make sure that the flowers will not be affected by direct sunlight, wind, heaters of any kind or air conditioners. Keep pets in mind as well and make sure that they will not accidentally knock the arrangement over.

Once you have taken care of everything above, all that you need to do is enjoy your bouquet! Just remember that flower arranging doesn’t end here. You will still need to maintain your bouquet by replacing the water, removing dying plant material and eventually placing the remaining flowers in a smaller vase when the time comes.
