Easy flower food recipe

Whether you buy a bouquet of flowers for yourself or somebody sends you a surprise flower delivery, you obviously want your flowers to last as long as possible. The florist will usually include a pacakge of flower food with the arrangement but what do you do when you need to top up or change the water? Well, fortunately, there are a few recipes that require basic ingredients and they are easy enough to do at home!

Ingredients:

– 1 tsp sugar

– 1 tsp bleach

– 2 tsp lemon juice

– 1 quart water (lukewarm)

Instructions:

Combine all the ingredients in a bowl and make sure that everything has dissolved properly before adding to the vase. It might be easier to dissolve the sugar in the lemon juice and bleach before adding the water. The lemon juice controls the pH, the bleach slows bacterial growth, and the sugar provides your flowers with some extra energy.

Ingredients:

– 1 cup lemon-lime soda

– 3 cups water (warm)

– 1/4 tsp bleach

Instructions:

Another really easy recipe that requires all the ingredients to be combined one by one. Start by mixing the soda with the water before adding the bleach. You can mix everything up in the vase rather than having to transfer from a bowl to the vase. Since the soda contains sugar, you won’t need to add any more and you don’t need to mix this blend quite as much.

Ingredients:

– 2 Tbsp white vinegar

– 2 Tbsp sugar

– 1/2 tsp of bleach

– 1 quart water (warm)

Instructions:

Dissolve the sugar in the vinegar and add the bleach. Finally add the water and pour into your vase. Sugar dissolves quicker in substances like lemon juice, vinegar, and so on. If you add the water before the sugar is dissolved, it will slow the process because the acidity is diluted.

Remember, your floral preserve or food is only one step when it comes to maintaining your cut flowers. You will still need to trim the stems, change the water, keep them away from wind and sun, and remove any dead plant material. If you rely solely on flower food to keep your flowers alive for as long as possible, you are bound to be disappointed.
