Caring for various potted plants

Different types of potted plants require different care. It’s not only about the amount of water, but also temperatures, sunlight, and when to trim the plant so that it can flourish when it blooms again. Here are some essential care tips for the most popular house plants.

African Violets are lovely plants and they can bloom for nine months out of the year if their needs are met. Their soil should be kept moist to dry. You should let the soil dry out before each watering and this will encourage blooming. Water at the bottom and not over the top. Water can damage the leaves. They enjoy moderate light and temperatures. Do not expose the plant to sudden temperature changes. Wilted blossoms and leaves should be pinched off to encourage the growth of new blooms and leaves.

Chrysanthemums are available in various colours and they enjoy bright light. Once in bloom, they should be kept away from direct sunlight because this will burn the flowers. While in bloom, they need to be watered every couple of days or so. When no longer in bloom, the soil should remain moderately moist and the plant should only be watered when the surface of the soil is dry.

Bromeliads are native to South and Central America. They are fairly easy to care for. They enjoy bright, indirect light or even direct sun. The soil should be kept moist to dry. Water should be poured over the centre of the plant where the leaves meet. The plant should not sit in water. If possible, rainwater distilled water is ideal.

Amaryllis enjoys warmer climates. The plant may require some support as it grows heavier. Moderate watering is ideal as the soil should be kept moist but not soggy. The plant should not sit in water. Even when no longer in bloom, the plant still requires some sunlight in order to allow the leaves to collect energy. It will store energy for the next blooming season.

Cacti and succulents are some of the easiest to care for. They are accustomed to dry environments and they do best in the appropriate potting soil. When watering, you should pour ample water over the soil. Then allow the soil to dry out completely before you water again. If the soil becomes hard over time and no long absorbs water as well, you should put the plant in water and allow it to soak for about 30 minutes. This will soften the soil.

Kalanchoes are gorgeous plants with waxy leaves and clusters of flowers. If you want to keep this plant happy, you need to ensure that the soil is moist but not too wet. Wilting flowers should be pinched off and, depending on the temperature, these plants last up to four weeks.

Hyacinths are also wonderfully popular plants. They enjoy bright locations and moist, but not saturated, soil. Water your plant thoroughly and then allow to rest in the sink so that excess water can drain away completely. If need be, you can support the stems of these plants with bamboo sticks.

Cyclamen is another lovely plant to grow in your home. They need just the right amount of water. So, do not over or under water them. If the soil dries out, it can prevent the plant from blooming. These plants enjoy cooler temperatures but not too cold, of course. They also prefer diffused light.
