Breathe new life into old vases

Vases look lovely when you first buy or receive them. However, after time and due to regular use, they can become damaged and somewhat unsightly. Instead of stashing your older, uglier vases in the back of a closet where they will be forgotten, why not give them new life?

One great idea is to use some fabric and cut it into thin, long pieces. Twist these pieces and glue them to the exterior of the vase. This will give them colour and texture. Plus, you will be making the most of an old vase while putting an old item of clothing to great use.

Another fantastic idea is to wrap some twine around the vase but do not cover the entire vase. Simple wrap the twine over a few times and create a fun, random design. Then apply some paint (specifically paint for glass surfaces) and allow to dry. Once dry, remove the twice and you can now use your vase to hold flowers or even as a lamp. All you need to do is add a candle or LED candle to the vase.

If you like glitter, you can use a chunky glitter to spruce up your vase. Mask up the area that you do not want to cover with glitter and then apply spray mount glue to the uncovered areas. Add your glitter and let it dry before using your vase again. Wash with care and this vase will look great for a long time! Remember to apply a second coat of glue to hold the glitter in place and protect your design.

For something a bit more rustic, you can use some dry sticks or twigs and glue them to the exterior of your vase. Finish wth some twine or raffia and this will make the perfect autumn flower holder. You can even add other accessories like small acorns near the bow area of your raffia for that extra touch.

Remember, use the seasons and nature to inspire your design. Look at the vase and consider just how much you wish to conceal befor eyou begin. If you only want to cover a certain area, you could simply paint or stencil on a design. Don’t give up on those old vases – they still have plenty to offer!
