The best flowers for your wedding cake

Whether you are planning your own wedding or helping somebody through the planning process, you will most likely need to choose the décor. Fresh flowers are the decoration of choice and, since they are available in so many shapes, sizes, and colours, it’s no wonder we love them so much! Flowers also send a message and help set the tone of any event, including weddings. Apart from decorating the ceremony and reception areas, you may also like to add some colourful décor to your wedding cake. Flowers are fantastic for this but it is important to choose the right ones for the job. Some flowers drop a lot of pollen and some are not safe for consumption which is why we need to take care.

Remember, you could choose a single type of flower for your cake or several types. You can also stick to a single colour or add a few colours. Some even like to add foliage here and there. It all depends on the style and size of your cake. The size and number of flowers you use will depend on how tall and wide your cake is.

For a soft, pastel display, how about a few garden roses, Juliet roses, and spray roses? Allow them to drape down from the top to the base of the cake and make sure that you mix them up for a fine textural blend. Use peaches and soft pinks for the best result.

Tulips, dahlias, and chrysanthemums also look wonderful together and can be clustered together on top of the cake with some blooms lower down accompanied by some dark green foliage. Look for fern-like foliage since you want your leaves to be flat but with enough texture for that visual appeal.

Another option is the grouping of passion flowers, garden roses, and some lush succulents. Remember, they do not all need to be placed on the cake and some can be placed beside the cake, around the base. In this case, you might not want to create a trail but rather set a cluster of flowers on top, another cluster on the one side of the next layer and another cluster on the final layer but on the opposite side.

There are so many wonderful designs out there and all you need to do for inspiration is look up cakes and flowers online! If you are unsure about the best flowers for your cake, be sure to ask your florist.
