How to arrange hydrangeas

Hydrangeas are beautiful flowers and, upon closer inspection, it’s clear to see that they are also remarkable and unusual. Unlike flowers like roses and tulips, hydrangeas actually consist of clusters of small flowers on a single stem. They are available in various colours and their colour depends on the pH levels of the soil in which they are rooted. They are easy to care for as plants and they often produce a large number of blooms when in season. These clustered blooms are a florist favourite. This is mostly due to the fact that they are easy to work with and you only need a few stems to create a stunning effect. If you want to make your own hydrangea flower arrangement, here’s how to do so in a few simple steps.

Things you need:

  • A Small fish bowl (round in shape and clear)

  • 6 hydrangea flower stems with leaves

  • Suitable foliage (like ferns)

  • Flower food for the vase water

  • Sharp clippers or scissors

Instructions:

The first thing you need to do is prepare your vase. Allow your flowers and foliage to rest in some room temperature water while you do this. Clean the vase and add some room temperature water along with the flower food. Make sure that the flower food has dissolved completely before you continue.

  • Trim the hydrangeas so that they are the right length for the height of the vase. You want to cross the stems across the vase so they will criss-cross one another in the water. If you have long-stemmed hydrangeas, don’t discard the leftover part of the leafy stems! You can add them to the arrangement as foliage. Make sure that all of the stems are trimmed at an angle so that they absorb more water. This will help keep them fresher for longer.

  • Arrange your stems in such a way that they are evenly spaced apart. The easiest way to do so is by placing a stem and then placing another one directly opposite,.

  • Feel free to use several colours of these flowers or, if you prefer, you can stick to a single colour.

  • Add some foliage in between and, if you like, you can even add some baby’s breath here and there.

  • Display in a spot where they will be adored and be careful not to expose them to direct sunlight, extreme cold or heat.

  • Monitor the water level in the vase and make sure that you top it up and change the water regularly. When changing the vase water, inspect the stems for a slippery substance. This is bacteria and it will shorten the life of your flowers. If you notice this, give your flowers a little trim. Add more flower food every time you add or change the water.

  • If you want to give your bouquet a theme, you should choose the appropriate colour flowers. For example, if you want to celebrate the arrival of a baby girl, you should opt for pink or pink and white flowers. You can also add a ribbon to the vase or other accessories to support the theme.
