While many people love decorating their homes with fresh flowers and plants, many still underestimate the impact foliage and lush greenery can have. Here are some of the best types of greenery that you can use to fill your home with life even in the coldest months.

Needle-leaf foliage

There are several types of foliage that have this sort of appearance. These include cedar, spruce, fir and pine. You may recognize some of these names since they are often used as Christmas trees in many homes. Cedar cuttings are pliable which makes it great for creating various decorations. While it can appear dry after a few weeks, it will not lose its needles. Spruce is great for swags, garlands and wreaths. As it dries, it will start to lose its sprigs. To prevent this from occurring prematurely, you can water the floral foam in which the arrangement is anchored or you can mist the display. Fir is another popular option for garlands and wreaths. Pine is known for its amazing scent and long needles. It is also known for being pliable and easy to work with when creating designs like garlands.

Broad leaves

If you are looking for foliage with broader leaves, you should consider using holly, ivy or magnolia. Holly is associated with the holiday season and it is loved for its dark green or variegated leaves. The iconic shape of the leave along with the red berries make it a lovely addition to any room. Ivy is flexible and can be used in so many areas of the home. You can use these leaves to create garlands, swags or even as part of your dining room table centrepiece. Magnolia is known for lasting long and it has a golden tint as it dries. The flat, broad leaves are dark green at the top while the underside is muted. This ensures that they already create contrast all on their own.

When choosing foliage for your home this autumn and winter, make sure that you don’t limit yourself to a single variety. By all means, you should combine more than one variety to ensure maximum variety and contrast.
