During the colder months of the year we rely heavily on various sources of heat throughout our homes. In addition, many people enjoy lighting candles at the dinner table rather than eating under a bright light. Any kind of open flame can be a fire risk. Here are some important flower and plant fire safety tips.

Candles

If you plan on using candles anywhere near a flower or plant display, you should pay close attention to that flame. Never leave any candle unsupervised. Even if you don’t think that there is anything flammable nearby, accidents happen in a heartbeat. This is one reason why so many people prefer using LED candles instead of the real thing. Especially if you have pets or children.

Fireplaces

While you do not want your flower or plant display to freeze in winter, you also don’t need to place them too close to a fire. In fact, if you set your flowers or plants too close to any source of heat, it will cause them to perish sooner than they should. Moderate temperatures are good but too much heat will have the opposite effect.

Avoid obstructions

Make sure that your flower and plant displays do not cause an obstruction in your home. In other words, you want to ensure that they are not blocking the path to the nearest exit. This is especially important when decorating your home for the holidays. So often we see homeowners buy massive Christmas trees that make it difficult to get from one end of the room to the other. This can prove especially dangerous in the event of an emergency. You want to make sure that you and your family will not get stuck inside if there is any kind of disaster.

By keeping these flower and plant fire safety tips in mind, you can rest assured that your home will be that much safer. Remember, these tips are not only for fresh flowers and plants, but artificial ones too. Artificial plants and blooms are just as flammable as fresh ones so you need to make sure that they are a good distance away from any open flames or sources of heat.
